The Udupi Relief Project was a critical local emergency operation led by the Dar ul Huda Charitable Trust to support residents in their home district during periods of severe flooding and torrential rainfall. As part of their “Series of Relief and Humanitarian Projects,” the Trust utilized its local presence to provide immediate assistance to families whose homes and livelihoods were submerged by rising waters.
The floods in the Udupi region were particularly dangerous due to several factors:
Rapid Inundation: Heavy monsoon downpours caused local rivers like the Swarna and Sita to overflow their banks with almost no warning, submerged low-lying areas, and trapped residents in their homes within hours.
Infrastructure Collapse: The force of the water led to significant soil erosion and the collapse of several small bridges and connecting roads, cutting off entire neighborhoods from essential services and medical help.
In response to this local crisis, the Trust mobilized its volunteers to distribute essential survival kits. Based on the project records, the items provided included:
1. Apparel & Bedding
Clothing: Fresh sets of wearable clothes for men, women, and children who had lost their belongings.
Protection: High-quality Blankets and Bedspreads to help those staying in temporary shelters.
Basic Wear: Towels, lungis, and essential garments.
2. Food & Hygiene Essentials
Dry Ration Kits: Rice, dal, and cooking oil to ensure families could cook meals once they returned to their homes.
Immediate Sustenance: Biscuits, milk powder, and clean drinking water.
Hygiene Kits: Soap, toothpaste, and antiseptic liquids to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of the flood.
This project highlighted the Trust’s role as a first responder in the Udupi community, ensuring that local victims received the dignity and support needed to begin the recovery process.
