Kokan Flood Relief Project

The Kokan Flood Relief Project is a comprehensive emergency response and rehabilitation mission by the Dar ul Huda Charitable Trust, launched to support the victims of the massive floods that devastated the Kokan region, particularly in areas like Mahad and Chiplun.

Following the immediate rescue phase, the Trust transitioned into long-term support to help residents rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

The Severity of the Floods

The 2021 Kokan floods were among the most destructive in the region’s history:

  • Unprecedented Water Levels: In towns like Chiplun, water levels rose to a staggering 15–20 feet in a matter of hours, submerging the ground floors and even first floors of thousands of buildings.

  • Massive Landslides: The heavy rains triggered deadly landslides in the surrounding hilly terrain, which buried entire villages (like Taliye), claiming dozens of lives and completely cutting off road access for emergency responders.

Dar ul Huda Relief Items & Services

The Trust provided a wide range of essential aid to ensure both immediate survival and future self-sufficiency. Based on the project documentation, the list of support included:

1. Livelihood Rehabilitation (Haath Gaadi)

  • Custom Hand Carts: Provided to small vendors and street traders who lost their only source of income. This allowed them to restart their businesses selling fruits, vegetables, and other goods.

2. Domestic & Essential Supplies

  • Clean Drinking Water: Large-scale distribution of bottled water to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

  • Food Ration Kits: Kits containing rice, wheat flour, oil, and pulses to sustain families for weeks.

  • Hygiene Kits: Soap, toothpaste, brushes, and antiseptic liquids (Dettol).

3. Apparel & Bedding

  • Clothes: Fresh, wearable sets of garments for families who lost everything.

  • Sleep Essentials: High-quality blankets and bedsheets to provide comfort in damp, post-flood conditions.

4. On-Ground Coordination

  • Volunteer Deployment: A dedicated team from the Dar ul Huda Udupi Guidance Centre traveled directly to the Kokan belt to manage the sorting and distribution of “consignments” (large relief bags) and ensure they reached the most remote affected areas.

Through this mission, the Trust underscored its commitment to “Social Cooperation,” proving that their humanitarian reach extends far beyond their home base to wherever a crisis strikes.
