The Clothes Distribution Project for Poor People, Udupi - 2017

The Clothes Distribution Project for Poor People (2017) serves as one of the foundation initiatives of the Dar ul Huda Charitable Trust in Udupi, Karnataka. This project, a cornerstone of the Kapada Bank, was designed to address the basic clothing needs of the local underprivileged population, ensuring that every individual in the community has access to clean and respectable apparel.

The Severity of the Situation

In 2017, many marginalized families in the Udupi district faced significant hardships that made this intervention critical:

  • Economic Displacement: High living costs in urban and semi-urban coastal areas often forced low-income laborers and their families to prioritize food and shelter, leaving them with worn-out or inadequate clothing.

  • Climate Exposure: Udupi experiences intense monsoon rains and high humidity. For those living in makeshift or poor housing, the lack of multiple sets of clean, dry clothes often led to persistent skin conditions and a drop in overall health and hygiene standards.

Project Details & Items Provided

The distribution took place at the Dar ul Huda Udupi Guidance Centre, where a systematic process was established to collect surplus garments from donors and provide them to those in need.

The items provided during the 2017 drive included:

  • Daily Wear Apparel: Fresh and wearable sets of clothes for men, women, and children.

  • Work & School Clothing: Specific items suitable for laborers and students to help them maintain dignity in their professional and academic environments.

  • Essential Textiles: Lungis, towels, and bedspreads to improve the living conditions within the homes of the beneficiaries.

  • Footwear: Basic slippers to protect residents from soil-borne diseases and the rough terrain of rural coastal areas.

This early project established the logistical framework for what would eventually grow into a massive network covering multiple states, reinforcing the Trust’s mission of “Social Cooperation” through the simple yet impactful act of sharing.
